Project Details
| Project name: | Libra/Sekem Composting project 2, Alexandria Desert Road |
|---|---|
| Country: | Egypt |
| Scope: | Agricultural Methane |
| Description: | The project activity entails composting of agricultural waste (plant residues and animal manure). The material is treated at the project site and is accumulated in windrows for an aerobic degradation of the biological waste. The aeration of these piles is ensured by rotation. The emission reduction originates by avoidance of methane emissions, which occurs during the anaerobic degradation of the agricultural waste. In Egypt it is not allowed to dump organic wastes illegally, nevertheless it is common practice in the country to use this way to dispose the waste. Other possibilities are the dumping at the municipal solid waste disposal site, burn it illegally or for some parts of the input material used in the project activity also other aerobic treatment (e. g. fertilizer). Soil and More International B. V. has developed a standard and technique to degrade this organic waste aerobic through composting to generate high quality compost which can be used as organic fertilizer. The effect of this aerobic degradation is the avoidance of methane emissions, because during the composting process only CO2 will be emitted if aerobic conditions are ensured during the process. |
